ESAT Physics: choose the model before the equation

Identify the system and the relationship that governs it. Then use equations, units and limiting cases to check your reasoning.

Cover the seven topic areas

The Physics specification covers electricity, magnetism, mechanics, thermal physics, matter, waves and radioactivity. Use the syllabus checklist alongside the official Physics guide. Keep each area visible in your plan, even when one of them feels more familiar.

For each relationship in the specification, check that you can identify its quantities, explain its assumptions and rearrange it without a calculator. Then practise deciding when it applies. Knowing an equation is only one part of setting up a physical model.

Set up the problem in a useful order

  1. Name the system. Decide which object, circuit section or process the question asks about. A force on one object is different from an internal force within a larger system.
  2. List givens and the target. Attach units and a direction or sign where needed. Separate stated information from an assumption you are making.
  3. Choose the relationship. Explain why it applies before substituting. Constant-acceleration relationships need constant acceleration; a circuit rule must be applied to the correct junction or loop.
  4. Rearrange and simplify. Keep a calculation symbolic long enough to spot cancellation or a ratio. Convert units before combining quantities.
  5. Check the result. Check its units, sign and size. Ask what your expression predicts if a relevant input becomes very small or is doubled.

In a circuit, start with what is shared: current through components in series, or potential difference across parallel branches. For mechanics, decide whether a force, energy or momentum relationship fits the stated process. The question's conditions determine which simplifications are justified.

Let the axes determine the meaning

Displacement against timeThe gradient gives velocity. A negative gradient describes motion in the chosen negative direction.
Velocity against timeThe gradient gives acceleration. Signed area gives displacement; area below the time axis contributes negatively.
Speed against timeArea gives distance travelled. Speed does not carry the direction information in velocity.
Current against potential differenceRead which quantity is on each axis. A straight line through the origin indicates a constant ratio; changing the axes changes the gradient's meaning.

A graph does not have to start at zero. Use changes in the plotted quantities when finding a gradient, and check the scale on each axis. For a curve, distinguish a tangent gradient at one point from an average gradient across an interval.

Treat units as part of the calculation

Converting an area or volume requires applying the length conversion to every dimension. Keep units in intermediate calculations so that a missing power is visible. For ratios, first check whether the quantities use the same units.

Dimensional consistency can reject a wrong expression. It cannot prove that an expression has the right numerical factor or describes the right physical process. Use it alongside the model and the limiting-case check.

Repair the cause of the mistake

After a wrong answer, classify the earliest error: model choice, missing knowledge, graph interpretation, algebra, units or arithmetic. Record a specific correction. “I used the total current for one parallel branch” tells you what to practise next.

Close the solution and explain how to set up the problem again. Then try a fresh problem with a changed arrangement, unknown quantity or representation. Repeating the same numbers can check your explanation, but it does not establish that you can solve an unseen problem.

A standard Physics module has 27 questions in 40 minutes, without a calculator. Once you can solve a type of problem untimed, use an unused module paper to practise choosing when to move on. Use approved adjusted timing where applicable, and schedule review after the paper.
