ESAT Biology: turn knowledge into an explanation
Use familiar biology to explain an unfamiliar result. Start with the mechanism, then check what the evidence actually shows.
Choose what to revise
The Biology specification covers cells, membranes, cell division and sex determination, inheritance, DNA, gene technologies, variation, enzymes, animal physiology, ecosystems and plant physiology. Use the topic checklist to record which ideas you can apply without notes. A familiar heading is a starting point for checking your knowledge.
For a weak heading, open its section in the official Biology guide. Attempt an exercise before looking at its answer, then explain the reasoning in your own words. The guide is a free reference organised by the specification; you can use the sections you need without reading it from beginning to end.

Connect cause and effect
After recalling a process, write a short chain: what changes first, what that changes next, and what you would observe. Keep the biological object precise. A change in the amount of an enzyme, its activity and the amount of its product are different claims.

| Plants and ecosystems | Distinguish a process within an organism from a change in a population. Check the time scale and resource being discussed. |
Then change one condition mentally and make a prediction before checking the explanation. If your prediction is wrong, find the first unsupported link in your chain. That gives you a smaller repair task than rereading the entire topic.
Read the experiment before its conclusion
- Name the comparison. Identify the groups, the changed condition and the outcome measured. Check the units and whether a result is a total, a mean, a percentage or a rate.
- Read the axes and key. Distinguish an amount from its rate of change. On an amount-against-time graph, a steeper gradient represents a faster change; the highest point need not be the highest rate.
- Check the baseline. Percentage changes depend on the starting value. When comparing groups of different sizes, decide whether counts or proportions answer the question.
- Limit the inference. An observed association alone does not establish its cause. Consider what the design controlled and what alternative explanation remains possible.
- Return to the wording. A statement can be biologically plausible and still go beyond the supplied evidence. Choose what the question and data support.
Repeated measurements help you assess variability. They do not automatically remove a systematic measurement error or make two different groups comparable. Explain what a proposed improvement would change before accepting it.
Turn an error into the next task
Record the first point where your reasoning failed. Use a concrete note such as “I compared totals from unequal group sizes” or “I treated concentration as the amount present”. Add the corrected principle and a fresh question to try later.
A missing fact calls for targeted recall. A broken mechanism calls for rebuilding the causal chain. A graph error calls for another interpretation task with different axes or units. Keep aided and repeated attempts separate from new attempts without help.
