ESAT preparation resources: what do you actually need?
ESAT means Engineering and Science Admissions Test. Start with the free UAT-UK materials: the specification, subject guides and official practice. A book, question bank or tutor is optional. Choose extra support for a named learning problem after trying its explanation, rather than buying from a question count or a promised score. UAT-UK preparation policy, accessed 2026-09-24.
Start with the official free route
The UAT-UK preparation hub supplies guides for Mathematics 1, Mathematics 2, Physics, Chemistry and Biology, plus historic ENGAA and NSAA papers annotated where questions fall outside the ESAT specification. Use those annotations before selecting older questions. Access date: 2026-09-24; research baseline: 2026-09-23.
- Confirm your course requirements with the module checker. Do not choose resources for a module your course does not ask for.
- Use the specification checklist to identify a precise gap, then study the relevant official subject guide.
- Attempt a fresh official sample or specimen. The official paper directory distinguishes these from older papers and original practice.
- Review the first step that went wrong. Choose a fresh question that changes the numbers or representation before repeating a full paper.
This is our suggested sequence, not an official requirement to complete a particular number of hours. Keep one unfamiliar practice set for a later check under the timing that applies to you.
Choose support for the problem you can name

A book is useful when you can actively work through its examples and check your reasoning. A bank is useful when it supplies fresh, relevant questions and explanations you can learn from. A tutor is useful when they can observe and correct a thinking error you cannot diagnose alone. These are selection criteria, not claims that one format always raises scores more than another.
Test an explanation before buying more of it
Worked example Original teaching example: successive percentage changes
A quantity rises by 20%, then falls by 20% of its new value. What fraction of the original remains?
Multiply the factors: 6/5 × 4/5 = 24/25. The quantity is 96% of the original. The second percentage uses a different base. Starting from 100 gives 120, then 96, which checks the symbolic calculation.
Adding +20 and −20 treats both changes as percentages of the original. A useful explanation identifies that changed base, rather than just saying the answer is 96%.
Transfer check: what percentage rise reverses a 20% fall? After the fall, the quantity is 4/5 of the original. Multiplying by 5/4 restores it, so the required rise is 25%. If you can explain why, you have evidence of learning beyond remembering the first answer.

- Check whether questions are original, official specimens or republished legacy material. Count what you have not already attempted.
- Ask whether an explanation addresses the attractive wrong answer and includes enough reasoning to reproduce the method.
- For tutoring, try a diagnostic explanation and agree what you will practise afterwards.
- Record the full price, expiry, renewal terms and what feedback is actually included. Compare the same duration.
- Keep raw practice marks separate from official scaled scores. Use the score interpretation tool to understand the distinction.
