ESAT specimen papers: why the real test can feel harder

The ESAT specimen is a format lesson, not a live-score forecast. UAT-UK provides five specimen tests and five sample exams, one for each module, inside the Pearson test player. They are not public PDFs, and the practice tests do not award a score when you finish. Pearson VUE practice tests · UAT-UK Prepare · UAT-UK preparation materials

What the specimen is designed to show

Use the specimen to learn how the test behaves on screen. The ESAT is computer-based. Each module has 27 multiple-choice questions and 40 minutes. The clock is separate for each module, candidates can move between questions within a module, and an erasable booklet is provided because calculators are not allowed. ESAT Content Specification · ESAT Technical Report 2024-25

The first run should answer practical questions. Can you read the stem and options without losing your place? Can you move to another question and return to it? The unanswered state should be clear when you come back. These are screen habits. They are worth fixing before you add a clock. Pearson VUE practice tests

The specimen cannot tell you what your live scaled score will be. UAT-UK says the specimen and sample tests do not award a score on completion. Use the result as a format check and a list of questions to review, not as an admissions number. UAT-UK Prepare

What the sample test is designed to show

Save the sample or practice test for a timed dress rehearsal. It puts the module inside the Pearson workflow, so it tests the screen habits you learned in the specimen alongside the 40-minute clock. The clock does not carry from one module to another, and finishing early does not create extra time later. Pearson VUE practice tests · ESAT Content Specification

Sample or practice testRehearse one timed module in the Pearson player.Converting a raw result into an official score.

Sit the sample in one uninterrupted block. Use the same no-calculator rule and the same working habit you will use for ESAT practice. Record how many questions you saw and answered. Note where the clock became expensive. Those records are more useful than a score that the practice test does not provide. UAT-UK Prepare · ESAT Technical Report 2024-25

Why familiar questions still run out of time

Forty minutes for 27 questions gives a budget of about 88.9 seconds per question. It is a planning average, not a fixed timer on every item. The specification also says that candidates must apply knowledge in less familiar contexts, with some questions requiring more creative thinking. A familiar topic can still demand a new route under a short clock. ESAT Content Specification

The technical report shows what that clock does to the five modules. More than 90% of candidates used between 35 and 40 minutes. Maths 1 and Maths 2 were the most speeded modules in the report. ESAT Technical Report 2024-25

Mathematics 115%46%
Mathematics 217%52%
Physics10%31%
Chemistry5%15%
Biology3%6%

The second column counts an item that was never presented. The third also counts an item answered with five seconds or less. In Mathematics 2, 52% of candidates had at least one item in one of those states. That is why knowing the syllabus is only part of preparation. A route that starts quickly is worth practising. Why the legacy archive can feel easier

There is no public PDF of a live ESAT form. The official archive contains the 2016 to 2023 ENGAA and NSAA Section 1 papers, with answer keys. UAT-UK describes them as questions of the type found in the ESAT. They are useful question sources, but they are not released ESAT forms. UAT-UK preparation materials

The live ESAT is computer-based and Pearson-delivered. A legacy question paper is a fixed paper document. It can test the right mathematical or scientific method while leaving out the screen movement and the current module clock. It also does not provide live-form equating. Treat a legacy block as filtered practice, not as a simulated result. ESAT Content Specification · ESAT Technical Report 2024-25

The archive is still valuable. Use the current specification to decide whether a question belongs in your set. Keep the item when its content and method match the module. Adapt it when the idea is current but the paper presentation needs a different working habit. Skip it when the method is outside the current boundary. Calibrate without inventing a score

UAT-UK reports a scaled score from 1.0 to 9.0 for each module. The score is reported to one decimal place. There is no aggregate ESAT score, and the technical report does not publish a raw-mark-to-scaled-score table for old papers or private mocks. The published anchors are a median of 4.5 and a 90th percentile of about 7.0. ESAT Technical Report 2024-25

A raw mark tells you what happened in that paper. It does not tell you the official ESAT score that a different, equated module would produce. Keep the paper name, eligibility decision, reach, timing and error cause beside the raw mark. ESAT Technical Report 2024-25 · UAT-UK preparation materials

A hard-but-fair rehearsal ladder

Change one pressure at a time. That lets you see whether a miss came from the question or from the delivery conditions.

1. Learn the screenComplete the relevant specimen without a clock.Navigation snags and unanswered-item handling.
2. Learn the paceUse an eligible legacy block at roughly 89 seconds per question.Accuracy, reach and the reason for each miss.
3. Run the moduleSit the Pearson sample for 27 questions in 40 minutes, with no calculator.Questions seen, correct answers and late guesses.
4. Build a marginUse a fresh equivalent block in 38 minutes after the full-time run is stable.Whether you can finish without a final rush.

The 38-minute target is a training margin. It is not an extra rule set by UAT-UK. The official test remains 40 minutes per module. If the full-time sample is still untidy, repeat that stage before shortening the clock. ESAT Content Specification

Do not spend every official sample test trying to obtain a number. Use one to learn the workflow and one when your source filtering and pacing log are ready. A fresh original question set can carry the shorter-margin drill without spending another Pearson rehearsal. Pearson VUE practice tests · UAT-UK Prepare

The Pearson setup check

CalculatorNone. The calculator rule is part of the ESAT specification.
NavigationMove within the current module and return to marked questions.
EndgameAnswer every item. ESAT marking gives one mark for a correct answer and has no negative marking.

The first four checks come from the ESAT format rules. Non-linear navigation and the no-negative-marking rule come from the technical report and content specification. Practise the whole sequence before you judge the result. ESAT Content Specification · ESAT Technical Report 2024-25
