Worked solution

The route in 4 steps

  1. Let the original volume be V litres, so the volume of acid is 0.35V0.35\text{V} litres.

  2. Adding 8 litres of water changes the total volume to V+8\text{V} + 8 but does not change the acid volume.

  3. The new concentration gives 0.35V=0.28(V+8)0.35\text{V} = 0.28(\text{V} + 8).

  4. Thus 0.07V=2.240.07\text{V} = 2.24, so V=32 litres\text{V} = 32 \text{ litres}.
